Why Whitby for our Wedding?
Why did Colin and I decide upon Whitby for our wedding? Whitby on Yorkshire’s east coast is a picturesque and charming seaside town steeped in history which has become a haven for romantics since Victorian times. We have been visiting the town for many years now and so that when Colin proposed after a very boozy but delectable New Year supper at the Moon and Sixpence brasserie, the only place for us to marry was Whitby! Mind you, the wedding nearly didn’t take place as I didn’t believe Colin and told him not to be so silly as he was drunk!
We quickly decided on what type of ceremony we wanted and on the 2nd January, the first
day Whitby Registration Office opened up after the New Year, I took Colin for a visit. The Registrar, thought I was a tad keen since Colin had only proposed a couple of days earlier! The day was booked! The next decision was where to hold our wedding reception? This provided us with many excuses to visit Whitby over the next few weeks to try out possible venues. We decided that Estbek House Restaurant in Sandsend would be the venue for us as Tim and David the owners were so charming, helpful and are accomplished hosts. Tim’s food is elegant and delicious and with David being an avid wine enthusiast, who has a special interest in wines from Australia, we knew that Estbek House would be the perfect place for us!
Our big day started with a delicious cooked breakfast at Estbek House (more about Estbek House later on). Tim the chef and co-owner makes his own bread and marmalade so even the toast is extra-special! After breakfast Colin drove me into Whitby where I had an appointment with Katie at the Harper Brown Beauty Salon. Despite my nerves, Katie calmed me down and did my make-up for me and the result was just what I wanted – natural and pretty. After Katie had finished my make-up, I then went to Contemporary hairdressers of Whitby, where Laura then took over the calming down and pampering.
Laura created the perfect hairstyle for my gorgeous glittering tiara. Quickly home to get dressed and to have a fortifying glass of champagne with Colin, Chris, Kirsty and Adam!
We booked Harrisons Taxis of Whitby to take our little wedding party from home to the Registration Office and when they knew the booking was for a wedding they made sure that one of the cars was their beautiful pale blue Rover saloon. Mind you I very nearly ended up marrying the wrong man as Chris decided it was the car for him and so when I got into the back of the Rover I found myself sitting next to him and not Colin! Narrow squeak there Chris!
